I’ve been to Budapest five times now, and every trip I’ve stayed somewhere different — hostels when I was backpacking on a budget, and hotels on the trips where I just wanted a proper bed and a door I could lock without worrying about noise. If you’re past the hostel phase (or just want a break from it), here’s my honest breakdown of where to book a hotel in Budapest, by neighbourhood.

If you’re travelling solo on a tighter budget and want something more social, I also have a full hostel guide → with my picks for that.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay?

If you want…Stay in…
Nightlife, ruin bars, walkable to everythingJewish Quarter (District VII)
Quiet, upscale, great viewsBuda side (Castle District / Watertown)
Best transport connections, centralDeák Ferenc tér / District V
A calmer, greener escapeMargaret Island area

🏙️ Jewish Quarter (District VII) — Best for First-Timers & Nightlife

This is where I’d tell any first-time visitor to book. You’re walking distance from the Great Synagogue, the ruin bars, and most of the Day 1–3 spots in my full Budapest guide. It’s loud at night in the best way — if you want quiet, look elsewhere.

My picks:

  • Bohem Art Hotel (8.9/10 on Booking.com, 4,919+ reviews) — best mid-range option, design inspired by the district’s street art, equidistant from Szimpla Kert and the Great Synagogue
  • Anantara New York Palace (9.2/10 on Booking.com, 3,999+ reviews) — the splurge choice — stunning building, legendary breakfast at the New York Café
  • Casati Hotel (9.5/10 on Booking.com, 2,220+ reviews) — boutique, award-winning, one of the highest-rated hotels in the city. ⚠️ Adults only

🏰 Buda Side (Castle District & Watertown) — Best for Views & Quiet

If nightlife isn’t your thing, cross the river. This is where I’d stay if I were travelling with my mum instead of alone — cobblestone streets, Fisherman’s Bastion five minutes away, and none of the Pest-side noise.

My pick:

Maison Bistro & Hotel (9.5/10 on Booking.com, 3,270+ reviews) — one of the highest-rated hotels in the whole city, individually decorated rooms, excellent breakfast, 5-minute walk from Fisherman’s Bastion

🚇 Deák Ferenc tér / District V — Best for Convenience

The most central spot in the city — every metro line meets here, and it’s a 5-10 minute walk to the Parliament, the Basilica, and the river. If this is your first time and you don’t want to think too hard about logistics, this is the safe choice.

My pick:

ROOMbach Hotel Budapest Center (9.0/10 on Booking.com, 7,340+ reviews) — great value for the location, easy walk to Deák Ferenc tér

🌳 Margaret Island Area — Best for a Calmer Trip

Not the obvious choice, but if you’ve already done Budapest once and want a slower second trip, staying near Margaret Island puts you close to the park, the Musical Fountain, and away from the tourist crush — with a tram ride into the centre when you want it.

My pick:

Ensana Grand Margaret Island Hotel (8.8/10 on Booking.com, 4,796+ reviews) — 4-star, inside the park itself, spa/thermal pool access, quiet setting with a rose garden nearby

A Few Booking Tips

  • Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead if you’re visiting May–June or during the Sziget Festival — prices jump fast.
  • Check if breakfast is included, a lot of mid-range Budapest hotels charge separately.
  • If you want a thermal bath included, some hotels near Rudas or the old Gellért partner with the baths for discounted entry — worth asking at check-in.
